New Mexico has a rocky gaming past. When the IGRA was passed by the House in Nineteen Eighty Nine, it seemed like New Mexico would be one of the states to get on the Native casino bandwagon. Politics guaranteed that wouldn’t be the case.

The New Mexico governor Bruce King announced a task force in Nineteen Ninety to draft an accord with New Mexico American Indian bands. When the panel arrived at an agreement with two big local tribes a year later, Governor King declined to sign the bargain. He would hold up a deal until 1994.

When a new governor took over in Nineteen Ninety Five, it seemed that Amerindian betting in New Mexico was a certainty. But when Governor Gary Johnson passed the accord with the Native tribes, anti-wagering forces were able to tie the accord up in the courts. A New Mexico court found that the Governor had overstepped his bounds in signing the deal, thereby costing the state of New Mexico hundreds of thousands of dollars in licensing revenues over the next several years.

It took the CNA, passed by the New Mexico legislature, to get the process moving on a full compact between the Government of New Mexico and its Amerindian tribes. A decade had been lost for gaming in New Mexico, including Native casino Bingo.

The non-profit Bingo business has increased from Nineteen Ninety-Nine. In that year, New Mexico charity game operators acquired only $3,048. That climbed to $725,150 in 2000, and passed one million dollars in revenues in 2001. Non-profit Bingo earnings have increased constantly since that time. Two Thousand and Five witnessed the largest year, with $1,233,289 earned by the owners.

Bingo is apparently favored in New Mexico. All sorts of owners try for a slice of the pie. Hopefully, the politicians are done batting around gaming as a hot button matter like they did back in the 1990’s. That is probably wishful thinking.

Much has been written in the press recently regarding the bingo industry struggling because of the smoking ban in Britain. Conditions have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has asked for big aid to help keep the industry from going bankrupt. But can the internet variation of this classic game offer a reprieve, or might it in no way compare to its bricks and mortar equivalent?

Bingo is an enduring game historically played by the "blue rinse" generation. Although the game of late had experienced a recent increase in acceptance with younger people deciding to visit the bingo parlours instead of the discos on a Saturday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the enforcement of the cigarette ban throughout Britain.

No more will players be permitted to puff on cigarettes at the same time dabbing numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public area will not be allowed to permit smoking in their locations and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most favorite locations where players like to smoke.

The effects of the cigarette ban can already be looked at in Scotland where smoking is already banned in the bingo halls. Players have plummeted and the industry is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where have all the players gone? Certainly they have not cast aside this classic game?

The answer is on the internet. Gamblers realise that they can play bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a beverage and cig and in the end, enjoy huge jackpots. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself just about perfectly with the anti smoking law.

Of course playing on the internet will never replace the social portion of going over to the bingo parlour, but for a demographic of players the law has left a lot of bingo players with no alternative.
