Much has been written in the papers not long ago concerning the bingo industry being hit as a result of the cigarette ban in the United Kingdom. Things have become so bad that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for massive tax breaks to help keep the businesses from going bankrupt. But can the online variation of this quintessential game present a lifeline, or will it never compare to its real life equivalent?
Bingo is an classic game generally played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game lately had witnessed a recent increase in acceptance with younger members of society deciding to hit the bingo parlors rather than the clubs on a weekend. All this is about to be destroyed with the enforcement of the anti smoking law throughout UK.
No longer will enthusiasts be permitted to smoke while dabbing numbers. Beginning in the summer of 2007 all public locations will not be allowed to permit smoking in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, one of the most favored areas where people enjoy smoking.
The outcome of the cigarette ban can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already prohibited in the bingo parlours. Numbers have plummeted and the business is literally fighting for its life. But where did the players go? Certainly they haven’t given up on this enduring game?
The answer is online. People realise that they can gamble on bingo using their computer at the same time enjoying a beer and fag and still have a chance at massive cash rewards. This is a recent anomaly and has timed itself just about perfectly with the ban on smoking.
Of course wagering on on the web is unlikely to replace the collective aspect of going down to the bingo parlour, but for a group of players the law has left a good many bingo enthusiasts with no option.
