A lot has been talked in the press just a while ago concerning the bingo industry singing the blues as a result of the anti smoking law in Britain. Things have grown so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested huge tax breaks to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. But can the online variation of this classic game present a lifeline, or will it in no way compare to its land based equivalent?

Bingo is an established game historically played by the "blue rinse" generation. However the game lately had witnessed a recent return in acceptance with younger people opting to visit the bingo parlors rather than the bars on a Saturday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the legislating of the smoking ban throughout UK.

No more will gamblers be permitted to smoke while marking numbers. Beginning in the summer of ‘07 every public place will no longer be allowed to permit smoking in their buildings and this includes Bingo parlours, one of the most favored locations where people enjoy smoking.

The effects of the anti cigarette law can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already not permitted in the bingo parlors. Profits have plummeted and the business is literally struggling for to stay alive. But where did all the players go? Certainly they have not given up on this ancient game?

The answer is on the net. People realise that they can bet on bingo from their computer whilst enjoying a cocktail and smoke and still enjoy huge prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has timed itself just about perfectly with the ban on smoking.

Of course playing online is unlikely to replace the collective portion of heading down to the bingo hall, but for a demographic of people the governing edicts have left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with no option.
