Much has been talked in the press recently regarding the bingo industry struggling because of the smoking ban in the UK. Things have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has called for massive tax cuts to help keep the businesses afloat. However does the web version of this classic game present a salvation, or will it never compare to its land based relative?
Bingo has been an classic game normally played by the "blue haired" generation. Although the game of late had seen a recent increase in popularity with younger men and women opting to go to the bingo parlours in place of the clubs on a weekend. This is all about to be destroyed with the introduction of the anti cigarette law all over Britain.
No more will enthusiasts be allowed to smoke whilst marking numbers. From the summer of 2007 every public location will not be permitted to allow cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most favorite places where people enjoy smoking.
The effects of the anti smoking law can already be felt in Scotland where cigarettes are already barred in the bingo parlors. Profits have plunged and the industry is beyond a doubt fighting for to stay alive. But where did the players go? Certainly they have not cast aside this established game?
The answer is on the internet. Gamblers realise that they can participate in bingo in front of their computer while enjoying a beverage and cig and still enjoy big jackpots. This is a recent development and has timed itself bordering on perfect with the anti smoking law.
Of course playing on the web is unlikely to replace the communal part of going down to the bingo parlor, but for a demographic of people the law has left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with no alternative.
