A lot has been reported in the papers just a while ago regarding the bingo industry singing the blues because of the cigarette ban in England. Things have grown so poor that in Scotland the Bingo industry has demanded big tax breaks to help keep the businesses afloat. But will the web adaptation of this classic game offer a reprieve, or might it never compare to its bricks and mortar relative?
Bingo has been an ancient game historically played by the "blue haired" generation. In any case the game of late had seen a recent increase in appeal with younger members of society deciding to visit the bingo parlours in place of the bars on a Friday night. All this is about to be reversed with the legislating of the anti cigarette law across England and Wales.
No more will players be allowed to smoke while marking off their numbers. Starting in the summer of ‘07 every public area will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their venues and this includes Bingo parlors, one of the most common locations where folks like to puff on cigarettes.
The effects of the anti cigarette law can already be observed in Scotland where smoking is already not allowed in the bingo halls. Players have plunged and the business is beyond a doubt struggling for its life. But where have the players gone? Surely they have not forgotten this established game?
The answer is on the internet. Players realise that they can participate in bingo using their computer whilst enjoying a cocktail and cig and still enjoy monstrous cash rewards. This is a recent development and has timed itself almost perfectly with the ban on smoking.
Of course gambling on on the internet could never replace the social part of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of players the governing edicts have left a number of bingo enthusiasts with little choice.
